Killed as Earthquake Strikes Indonesia's Java

A strong natural disaster has struck the Indonesian capital and other cities on the country's most populous island, Java, killing an unknown number of people.

Indonesian TV stations reported buildings had collapsed and captured people fleeing from their homes, causing heavy traffic as locals ran from coastal areas to higher ground.

According to US Geological Survey measurements the quake had a 6.5 magnitude and a depth of 91 kilometers.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning for parts of Java's coastline after the quake struck at 11:47 p.m. and said there was potential for waves of between 1 foot and 1.6 feet.

Indonesian authorities have said the natural disaster has killed an unconfirmed number of people on the island, which is where the capital Jakarta is located.
