Homelessness declined 10.4 percent in MA according to the latest national estimate by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Nationwide, the homeless population went up 0.7 percent, to 553,742. That's a 6.2 percent drop since a year ago and a 15.7 percent decline since 2010. But some states saw big increases in homeless population, including North Dakota, California, New Mexico and Vermont. "While 2017 saw a small rise in overall homelessness in the state as well as veteran homelessness, levels of family homelessness dropped over 36 percent, which is great progress".
The data also shows more of those people are going unsheltered compared to previous year, meaning they're likely sleeping on the streets.
Out of all jurisdictions that are required to report counts to receive federal funding, King County ranked third both in homelessness-behind only New York City and Los Angeles County-and in people living unsheltered. An updated CCH count will be released early next year. Numerous surveys of homeless service providers found that significant cutbacks in staff forced agencies to reduce services and reduce how many people they could serve.
"With rents rising faster than incomes, we need to bring everybody to the table to produce more affordable housing and ease the pressure that is forcing too many of our neighbors into our shelters and onto our streets", Carson suggested.

HUD's national estimate is based upon data reported by approximately 3,000 cities and counties across the nation.
HUD says more than 4,800 of Indiana's homeless residents were found in emergency shelters or transitional housing and almost 570 were living on the streets.
Overall, 68.2 percent of the homeless in California are unsheltered, the highest rate of any state.
2,330 were located in emergency shelters or transitional housing programs while 975 persons were unsheltered. It's an increase of less than one percent over 2016. On a single night in January 2017, 383 Veterans were experiencing homelessness.
