Facebook Messenger Games celebrate one year; rolls out live streaming feature

The feature will be introduced with Words With Friends early next year.

To mark its one-year anniversary, Facebook is also debuting a couple of new features for its Instant Games: live streaming and video chat.

Facebook rolled out its Instant Games platform previous year to developers so they could create gaming activities for Messenger and the platform's News Feed. But it's not about the past, Facebook has loads of new stuff for Games on Messenger.

While playing a Instant Game in the Messenger app tap the camera icon located in the upper right corner of the game.

In addition, Facebook is also launching new games for Messenger next year, including Angry Birds.

Once the broadcast ends, the video will be uploaded to either your Page or Profile depending on where you streamed to. Like all posts, these live video posts can be deleted at any time.

Live streaming of games is a feature already offered by Twitch Interactive Inc., Google Inc.'s YouTube and Microsoft Corp., but in Facebook's case, at least for now, the feature will be used for the entertainment of friends rather than monetization.

"I absolutely believe that the streaming community, the influencer community, will have the opportunity to see this as something they want to pick up on", Facebook's global director of games partnerships, Leo Olebe, told Venturebeat.

The new feature also enables users to video chat with their partner while they play a game together. And also allows users to add fun effects (pictured above) during their video chat. By the looks of things, this one will roll out title per title, since the first one slated to get it is none other thanWords with Friends. Angry Birds will be coming to the app in early 2018 with the ability to play with friends.

Over the next few weeks and months, Facebook is adding more titles to Instant Games, which will join original games, like Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Words With Friends Frenzy. Sonic Jump from SEGA Games Co. Sonic Jump is rolling out now in select regions and will launch globally in the coming weeks.
