Ryan Reynolds Will Play Detective Pikachu In New Movie

It must be fun to be Ryan Reynolds.

The 41-year-old Deadpool actor will star alongside Jurassic World star Justice Smith and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton.

THR is reporting that Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the voice of Detective Pikachu himself. Smith then joins Pikachu and "a sassy journalist" (Newton) to track him down.

Pikachu at the Premiere of "Pokemon the Movie 2000" at the Village Theater in Westwood, California on July 15, 2000. It's reported the role is motion-capture using Reynolds as the character. Detective Pikachu is a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things... and people.

Other information within The Hollywood Reporter's article states that "Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote the latest draft of the script".

Detective Pikachu is being helmed by Rob Letterman, who is best known for adapting R.L. Stine's '90s kid nostalgia pic, Goosebumps, for Sony.

Detective Pikachu's plot will be based on a kidnapping, with Pikachu (Reynolds) assigned to hunt the offender down. Universal Pictures will be distributing the film in regions outside of Japan, where long-time Pokemon film collaborator Toho will handle distribution duties.

As of now, Detective Pikachu remains without a release date.
