'Ingress' Overhaul: 'Ingress Prime' Superseding Niantic's First AR Game Next Year

The look and feel of the game will change, with an improved UI as well as improved graphics.

According to Niantic CEO John Hanke, Pokemon Go stole focus away from Ingress once the game went big; now that time has passed, the team is now ready to reward players of the Ingress community by offering "a modern, handsome version of the game".

For those who aren't familiar, Ingress is a mobile AR game that launched in 2012 and its systems are kind of the backbone of what became Pokemon GO.

"When Ingress first launched five years ago, we helped create a new genre of games that foster exploration, discovery, friendship and exercise", said John Hanke, founder and CEO of Niantic, Inc in a statement. It's broadly similar to Pokemon Go, albeit with a cyberpunk theme.

Scotland's mountain ranges, including the Cairngorms and Glen Coe, have already seen heavy snow falls in recent weeks. Despite the cold, many central and southern parts should still see a good deal of dry and sunny weather.

When it comes to the technical side of the revamp, Niantic is moving away from the platform it used when it created "Ingress". The change does not only mean taking advantage of the more advanced features of the new technologies, but also a more secure environment against cheaters. Despite the lack of resources afforded to Ingress, the game has managed to retain a strong community base - let's see if Ingress Prime can build on that as well as bring new players to the fold.

There will also be an anime series coming out in 2018, which will presumably expand the universe.

Ingress represents a pioneering style of real world mobile games featuring innovative massively multiplayer gameplay. Fans should expect a more streamlined interface and very different visuals compared to the ones they are seeing now.

There's a very dramatic trailer for the game below. An in-depth new user experience will introduce new and returning Agents to the Real World global game and battle between the Enlightened and Resistance factions. For one thing, it is also planning on launching its third AR title, "Harry Potter: Wizards Unit", next year.
