Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi Passes Away In Delhi


"Our deepest condolences on the passing of respected Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, our veteran Congress leader and former union minister".

He had recently been shifted to the Apollo Hospital, with his condition deteriorating and a hospital statement said: "He died at 12.10 pm today (Monday)". He was the I&B minister during Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance government.

Trinamool Congress ministers in West Bengal recalled their association with Dasmunsi whom they termed their political mentor.

Indian football fraternity also mourned the death of former AIFF President Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who served in the position for almost two decades.

The Congress leader had suffered a brain stroke in 2008 and was admitted to AIIMS.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also condoled the death of the veteran politician. She said Dasmunsi served the party and government "illustriously".

Also in the limelight was his two decades as the head of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). "His death is an irreparable loss to the Congress party and the country", she said.

Mr. Dasmunsi suffered a massive stroke and paralysis in October 2008 and slipped to comatose.

He was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Commerce in 1985.

Gandhi expressed solidarity with the family, particularly his wife Deepa, a former minister, and other supporters.
