Indira Gandhi was a mother to this nation, says Varun Gandhi


BJP MP Varun Gandhi today hailed his grandmother and Congress stalwart Indira Gandhi on her hundredth birth anniversary, calling her "a mother to this nation".

Floral tributes were paid to Indira Gandhi at a function organised at separate venues here by Haryana and Punjab units of the Congress.

The former prime minister also fought for Indias dignity and independence as a sovereign nation, against the dominance of superpowers, she said.

After paying tributes at the party office here, Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar led a motorcycle rally which began from here and would culminate at the former prime minister's memorial "Shakti Sthal" near Raj Ghat in Delhi. Her steely determination, clarity of thought and decisive actions made her a towering personality.

While the major part of the exhibition will be held in the sprawling lawns of Indira Gandhi Memorial, a part of the show, to be held indoors, will feature apparels she wore during some of the important historical events.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be recipient of International Jury of the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for this year.
