UC Browser has over 500 million downloads, and is a popular alternative to Chrome in India.

This falls in line with a report which emerged in August this year that pointed out that, UC Browser was under the government's scanner for alleged leak of mobile data of its Indian users. Earlier this year, a lab in Hyderabad called the Centre for Development and Advanced Training (C-DAC) was looking into how the browser was sending data including location data to remote servers in China. To add to that, it was claimed that the application could access user data even after its successful installation from the device.

Meanwhile, a user who claims to be working for UC Browser says that the ban is temporary. The app, which is particularly popular in India, has been delisted from the app store for misleading and unhealthy promotions. The report said that people had complained that the browser was controlling the device's DNS even after uninstallation. A senior IT ministry official had then told news agency PTI that it may face ban in the country if found guilty. In addition, it is the sixth most downloaded Android app in India. UC Web also has 100 million monthly active users from India, Android Authority reports. As well as being a hugely popular alternative to Google Chrome in its home region, UC Browser has an enormous base in India. Last month, UCWeb, part of Alibaba Mobile Business group, today launched its innovative mobile marketing platform, UC Ads in India.
