Canalys analyst Jason Low notes that cellular connectivity appears to be driving demand, which is mitigating concerns at wireless carriers that consumers aren't interested in cellular smartwatches (a concern that I shared previously). Apple shipped 23% of all smartwatches, fitness bands, and other wearables, Canalys said, just ahead of Chinese low-priced seller Xiaomi, at 21%, and Fitbit (fit), which captured a 20% market share. The Watch Series 3 is available in Wi-Fi only avatars as before in most markets, while some countries get the LTE variant as well that uses a separate data connection which gives it more capabilities even when a phone isn't paired. Despite increased shipments, the overall wearable band market dropped by 2% to 17.3 million units, primarily due to the waning demand for the basic bands, Canalys estimates.
Incidentally, this is the very same quarter where Google, which makes the Android Wear smartwatch platform to rival the Apple Watch, has been completely silent on the future of its smart watches. Nobody's streaming video to such a small screen. The third generation device had a significant impact on sales despite being launched just 10 days before the end of the quarter.
