A gunman "randomly picking targets" killed four people, including two children, and injured several others during a shooting spree Tuesday that ended near an elementary school in rural Northern California, sheriff's officials said.
Authorities received 911 calls of shooting at multiple sites, including the Rancho Tehama Elementary School, Tuesday morning, Assistant Tehama County Sheriff Phil Johnston said.
"Multiple shots were fired in Rancho Tehama, with multiple victims".
At least three children and one adult were brought to the Enloe Medical Centre, in Chico, California, the hospital confirmed to KHSL. The shooter himself has been killed by police and several victims are now being treated at a local hospital.
Johnston said the gunman spent about six minutes shooting into Rancho Tehama Elementary School before driving off to continue shooting elsewhere.

"I am told the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets", Johnston said. Johnston said that about 100 law enforcement personnel were spread out at "multiple scenes" in and around the school, and described local police as "spread thin". Officers recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns, which they believe were used by the shooter.
Tehama, the community in which the shooting occurred, is about 210km north of Sacramento and has a population of just 3500.
Flint says he had been shooting "hundreds of rounds" from large magazines.
Some students at the school were medically evacuated; it's not clear yet how many people were injured in the shooting. Ten people have been hospitalized, authorities say.
Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement offering condolences to families who lost loved ones in "today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren".
