Trump to slain soldier's widow: 'He knew what he signed up for'

It took the president almost two weeks to reach out to Johnson's widow, and when he finally did on Tuesday, Local 10 reports Trump told Myeshia Johnson, "He knew what he signed up for ... but when it happens it hurts anyway".

Wilson told Lemon she was in the limousine with Johnson's pregnant widow, Myeshia, and other family members when Trump's call came about 4:45 p.m. ET. "It's so insensitive. He should have not have said that".

"Sarcastically he said: 'But you know he must have known what he signed up for, '" Wilson recounted to NBC6.

Johnson died in an attack on Niger on October 4, along with three other Americans.

Johnson was one of four US soldiers killed in an ambush in Niger almost two weeks ago.

"David was a young man from our community who gave his life for our country".

"President Obama I think probably did sometimes, and maybe sometimes he didn't". He never said the word hero.

"He should have not have said that", Wilson told ABC 10, before repeating, "He shouldn't have said it". She was with Myeshia Johnson and her two children, ages 2 and 6, as she watched the casket carrying her husband arrive at Miami International Airport. Local politicians and officials lined up to honour him as his body was brought home.

"I heard what he said because the phone was on speaker", she told Lemon.

A White House official did not dispute Wilson's characterization of the phone call.

"I'm livid. He can't even have an open-coffin funeral because his body is so messed up, " Wilson told the Miami Herald.

Former President Barack Obama frequently called the families of soldiers killed in action and visited those wounded during his administration.

"As far as other presidents, I don't know, you could ask Gen. Kelly, did he get a call from Obama? I totally changed our military, I totally changed the attitudes of the military and they have done a fantastic job", Trump said.

Trump returned to the subject Tuesday, using the death of Chief of Staff John Kelly's son in 2010 to illustrate Obama's record on calling bereaved families, saying his predecessor did not call in that instance.
