In August of that year, the band wrapped up it's final tour in its hometown of Kingston, Ont.

Downie's death comes a month after the release of the band's documentary, Long Time Running, which showcases a behind-the-scenes look at the band on tour.

Page says he thinks Downie's work on social issues, like the rights of Canada's Indigenous Peoples, will help the country move forward.

Speaking with The New York Times around the band's final show, Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew summed up The Tragically Hip's influence: "We're a country that hasn't really embraced its history just yet".

The Tragically Hip - Downie, bassist Gord Sinclair, guitarist Rob Baker and drummer Johnny Fay - was formed in a high school in the Canadian province of Ontario in 1984.

And that was The Tragically Hip. In the end, though, the band's biggest USA moment came in 1995 when - after notching their third straight Canadian Number One album with Day For Night - they played Saturday Night Live.
