The launch of the super fast Intercity Express train didn't quite go to plan after the air conditioning broke and the service was delayed.

The fleet of intercity trains was created to be electric, but will switch to diesel power from Maidenhead, until lines to Cardiff are electrified.

It arrived at London Paddington 41 minutes late. An area of first class seating was closed off owing to water leakage from the air-conditioning, a problem which also affected a small area in standard class.

The first all-new British inter-city train for 40 years made its maiden journey Monday as part of a 7.6-billion US dollar investment to improve rail travel between Britain's main cities.

In total, Hitachi is delivery 36 five-carriage and 21 nine-carriage Class 800 trains as well as 22 five-carriage and 14 nine-carriage 802 trains.

"These trains have been running successfully on United Kingdom tracks for over two years and recently passed the industry standard 5,000 miles running without a fault".
