USA aircraft carrier, ROK navy to stage drills off Korean peninsula


"Both the South Korean and U.S. Navy will firmly maintain a combined maritime defense posture with a strong will to immediately repulse any kind of enemy provocations to protect the Republic of Korea".

U.S. Naval Forces Korea announced the arrival Friday morning, stating the visit was part of a regularly scheduled Western Pacific tour.

Joining the drill from the US military would be USS Ronald Reagan nuclear-powered aircraft carrier under the USA 7th Fleet.

The Ohio-class submarine USS Michigan (SSGN-727) arrived at Busan, South Korea's southeastern port city, earlier in the day.

U.S. Navy units participating in the exercise include USS Stethem (DDG 63), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), and USS Mustin (DDG 89).

For the exercise, the South Korean military will also mobilize P-3 anti-submarine aircraft, F-15K, FA-18, A-10 fighter jets and Lynx, AW-159, UH-60, MH-60R helicopters. MI is one of four Ohio-class guided-missile submarines, which are meant to provide both tactical strike and special operation mission capabilities from a "stealthy, clandestine platform".

The USS Tucson, based in Hawaii, is capable of anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike, surveillance and reconnaissance, Stars and Stripes reported. It is also equipped with about 150 Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of more than two-thousand kilometers.
