The Argentina striker was ruled out for between two and four weeks after breaking a rib in a auto accident in Amsterdam a fortnight ago. "Mendy was and is so important for us and six months a long time".

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero admits he would "love" compatriot Lionel Messi to join him at the Etihad but admits any potential deal would be "complicated".

Guardiola spoke at last night's 'Manchester City's Evening with Manager', presented by Betsafe. "Unfortunately it was long open, but now it is closed".

The striker could now be available for their weekend's game against Stoke City, a very positive news for Pep Guardiola, particularly as Gabriel Jesus is only expected to return from worldwide duty on Thursday (12 October).

"We will see about January, we are in October".

Aguero is City's top-scorer with six goals in as many Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola's side, who lead the standings on 19 points after seven fixtures.

Guardiola, speaking at his pre-match press conference, said: "He did his first training session after what happened and he did it quite well".

"He explained what happened".

While Aguero is on the verge of a comeback, captain Vincent Kompany is continuing to struggle with injury problems.

"The transfer window is closed now, we will see if we can add in January, the problem we have is the Mendy injury".

The centre-back has not played since injuring his calf during Belgium's 9-0 World Cup qualifying win over Gibraltar on August 31.

"He is much, much better but still injured", Guardiola said. It depends on him when he will come back.
