A police officer was shot and killed by a suspect in New Orleans early Friday morning, officials have confirmed.

Several officers returned fire and the suspect was hit and brought to a hospital and arrested, authorities said.

The Officer was transported to University Medical Center, where he died.

The New Orleans police commissioner says the officer was on patrol at Tower Lane and Lake Forest Blvd with three other officers when they spotted something suspicious.

"Our officer has expired", said police Superintendent Michael Harrison.

Police reported an "officer life in danger" around 12:30 Friday morning on the 6800 block of Cindy Place.

He is waiting for all family members to be notified of the Officers death.

Harrison said two officers might have fired on the gunman.
