Facebook supports full disclosure on Russia-backed ads: Sheryl Sandberg

Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer at Facebook, made the comments during her first public interview since Facebook announced that it had found Russia-linked accounts that bought ads during the 2016 USA election campaign. The company and others have said they are turning over information, but also that they are legally obligated to protect their users' privacy.

Some 470 accounts spent a total of approximately $100,000 between June 2015 to May 2017 on ads that touted fake or misleading news, according to Facebook. If the company accepts that it is a media firm, it would open the platform up to regulatory rules in the USA and other countries which Facebook would rather avoid.

Sandberg was meeting with lawmakers over Russian government-linked ads on Facebook meant to sow political chaos and influence the 2016 election.

On visits to Capitol Hill on Wednesday and Thursday, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, met with leaders of the House Intelligence Committee and said the company wanted to help investigators and would turn over more information. Trump has denied that there was any collusion between his campaign and associates and Russian Federation. "We're angry, we're upset, but what we really owe the American people is determination", to address foreign meddling.

Sources familiar with Facebook's contacts with Congress said that as recently as July this year, company officials were denying the existence of any paid Russian messaging, and only later acknowledged that the company had found $100,000 in sponsored traffic linked to 478 Facebook accounts.

"We do not want this kind of foreign interference in Facebook", she added.

Sandberg didn't say whether she believes Facebook played a role in electing Donald Trump as president, as critics have said it did by allowing the spread of fake news on its service.

She criticized Twitter's decision this week to remove a campaign video from Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee.

"You can ask her about the response", Clyburn told Politico. "In that ad, there's a lot of positions that people don't like, that I don't like".

Sandberg said Facebook didn't catch these ads earlier because it was focused on other threats, such as hacking.
