Mixed Reactions to Boy Scout Announcement


Boy Scouts of America made a big announcement and it's starting a national conversation. The rank is now only available through the boy's only organization.

"We believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children", said Michael Surbaugh, the BSA's chief scout executive.

The Boy Scouts of America said its decision is focused on serving families.

"A lot of millennial parents today indicate that they'd much rather be able to do stuff with their whole family", Etzenhouser said.

Others 24-Hour News 8 spoke with grew up watching family members in Boy Scouts.

"As we get into STEM programming, as we get into some of our adventure programming that we do", she said.

"Sometimes when I'm around boys I don't like to be myself".

The introduction of girls still does not mean that Boy Scouts' gatherings will necessarily include both genders.

Numerous den leaders in Cub Scouts are women, and girls participate in the Explorer, Venturing and STEM Boy Scout programs, Butler said. She's a fourth generation scout, a long-time volunteer and now a leader in Moline.

"I saw the pictures and it looked really fun and I wish that I had been there", Bernadette Flicker said.
