Gujarat elections to be held before 18 December: Election Commission


The commission announced that the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections will be held on November 9 while also announcing that the Gujarat assembly elections will be held prior to December 18.

The official said the reason the voting date for Himachal was fixed for November (resulting in a large gap with counting of votes) is due to the consideration of weather. He will announced the dates for Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. The EC also said that the elction would be conducted in single phase.

With announcement of dates, model code of conduct has been enforced in Himachal Pradesh.

An estimated 49.05 lakh voters, including over 20,000 new voters, will be exercising their franchise from 7,521 polling stations in Himachal Pradesh. Scrutiny will be done the next day and the last for withdrawal of candidates will be October 26.

As the term of the current legislative assembly ends in the third week of January, Gujarat may go to polls in December, indicated the poll panel recently.
