Arby's offering limited edition venison sandwiches again October 21

Last year, Arby's had a surprise hit on its hands when the limited-time Venison Sandwich sold out in hours.

The venison sandwiches, which were first sold in a handful of states previous year and sold out in minutes, are available while supplies last and will likely to sell out quickly, Arby's Chief Marketing Officer Jim Taylor.

The sandwich features a thick-cut venison steak, as well as crispy onions topped with a juniper berry sauce, served on a toasted specialty roll. While initially aimed at fewer than 20 Arby's units in hunting-heavy locations, the brand is bringing the sandwich to more than 3,200 units for $7.

The nationwide rollout comes after Arby's first sold it in 17 locations - a lot of them located in popular deer-hunting hot spots like Wisconsin, Tennessee and rural Pennsylvania - last fall. It's headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The venison is marinated in garlic, salt and pepper and then sous-vide for three hours. This year's sandwiches are limited edition and will only be available until supplies run out.

The venison sandwiched, tried in a limited release past year, will be available in all 3,300 stores across the nation, while the elk will be available in three restaurants in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

Sometimes you're not in the mood for a fast-food burger and you instead want to order the. deer? The sandwich has a tender elk steak topped with blackberry port steak sauce and crispy onions.

While both game meat sandwiches are intended for mass appeal (at least the Venison Sandwich, for now), the prioritization of specialty sandwiches signals a move by Arby's to target the consumer base of American hunters, a demographic of 20 million potential customers.

If the limited release success of the Venison Sandwich is any indication, Arby's customers are warming up to the idea just fine.
