Trump to visit United Kingdom on 'working visit' in early 2018

Donald Trump will visit Britain early next year, but it will be a "working visit" rather than a state visit, it has been reported.

The "working visit" would not feature the pomp of a state visit and is likely to be part of an global tour by Mr Trump rather than a trip focused exclusively on the United Kingdom, according to the newspaper.

The trip had been expected this summer, but the snap election as well as growing controversy over Trump's foreign policy have led to a rethink.

Trump may be allowed cut the ribbon on the brand new USA embassy which is close to completion at Nine Elms, near Battersea Power Station.

A source close to Sadiq Khan confirmed to HuffPost UK that the Mayor of London, who led criticism of the State Visit invitation, "would not object" to a working visit. For that reason people have been upset that he might come to the United Kingdom for a state visit, causing it to be "put on hold" out of fear there would be mass protests. She was the first world leader to visit the new president in Washington.

It is thought he could still make a full State visit - an honour usually reserved for a President's second term - at some stage.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May invited Trump to come for a state visit shortly after he took office in January.
