Last week, a Twitter account that posts Japanese trademark filings alerted the world to a new trademark application from Nintendo that includes an image of the 1989 Game Boy - as well as the kinds of goods that the trademark covers, like clothing, chachkies, and video game consoles. It was originally tweeted by a Japanese trademark bot, with an accompanying illustration depicting the iconic portable. Not exactly. The trademark offers no confirmation one way or the other, and this could simply be Nintendo attempting to protect the Game Boy brand and hold the trademark for a variety of different merchandising applications. Why file this trademark now if not to prepare for a new system? First up came the NES mini, followed by the recently released SNES mini, and there are rumours of an N64 version. Perhaps it's thinking about giving the Game Boy the same Classic treatment? Furthermore, not all games may work properly, especially since it was not officially released by Nintendo.
I think we can safely assume all six launch titles for the system will be included. We also can't forget the first Pokemon games, Dr. Mario, Kirby's Dream land, Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong, Golf, and Metroid.
