New Delhi bans fireworks for Diwali to combat chronic pollution

On Monday, the top court reinstated its September 2016 order that had suspended all licences of wholesale and retail sales of firecrackers in the region. Also, some reports are saying that this is not just for the people even for the Delhi air pollution which is rated "very poor" already before the Diwali. This year, Supreme Court has chose to not let the crackers be a reason behind the increasing pollution of Delhi. But on Monday, the apex court reversed its decision, ordered ban on sale till October 31, and said that the Sept 12 order allowing controlled sale of firecrackers will be effective from November 1. Diwali is on October 19 and the order effectively means that no firecrackers will be available for purchase before the festival.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who ruled the city-state for nearly 15 years, on Tuesday said that the firecracker ban on Diwali will disappoint people as it is a "sentimental religious celebration".

While the SC had issued a similar ban in the NCR region a year ago, it didn't have the opportunity to observe the impact on pollution levels, it said. The shopkeepers went to the Supreme Court, and on September 12 this year, it made changes, allowed controlled sale of crackers and almost 500 shopkeepers got licences. The traders say the court should allow them to sell the stocks they bought after the court relaxed its ban on licenses to sell firecrackers in September. Delhi-NCR SC ruling is a good 1 but the sized brains bringing in religion card here is stupid.

The Supreme Court order was seen as an attempt to check alarming pollution level in the national capital.

The news travelled fast in the narrow bylanes of the two markets in the Old City with shops piled high with crackers of all kinds, ranging from sparklers selling for about Rs 20 a stick to powerful bombs going up to Rs 1,000 and more.
