Local Texas Tech student describes terror on campus after fatal shooting


Another officer left the room and suddenly heard a bang.

A special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team was sent to look for the suspect, Lubbock police officer J. Rodgers said by phone.

The affidavit released Tuesday states 19-year-old student Hollis Daniels wasn't handcuffed while being processed at the police station.

The Texas Democratic Party is apologizing for a tweet that linked the state's "campus carry" law to the arrest of a Texas Tech University student in the fatal shooting of a campus police officer.

Neighbors had nice things to say about the Daniels family, but it's clear to many that something went terribly wrong. Corporal Snelson went back into the briefing where he saw Officer XXXX with an apparent gunshot wound.

The affidavit says Daniels told officers he had done "something illogical" and that "he was the one that shot their friend". He was in Lubbock County Jail on Tuesday with bail set at $5 million.

"I want to convey to the wife of Officer East, their two daughters and their extended family our heartfelt condolences, and to assure them that they are in our prayers", Schovanec said during the news conference.

After the two responding officers allegedly found the drugs and paraphernalia, Daniels was taken to the police station for questioning.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has stated that state law enforcement will be deployed to assist campus and local police forces in an investigation.

Daniels fled but was recaptured and charged with capital murder of a peace officer.

Quinn Cox, a junior at the University of Texas, Austin, and the Southwest region director for Students for Concealed Carry, said that conversations about campus carry were irrelevant to Monday's shooting, since Daniels was afoul of the law, having a firearm in his dorm under the circumstances he did. "And that's the way we at UTPD see ourselves, that our job is to help students get through young adulthood as they mature so they can get out into society and realize their dreams and then in time will take care of us in the future".

In a statement, the university says campus police made a student welfare check Monday evening and - upon entering the room - found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old student accused of fatally shooting a Texas Tech University police officer at the campus police station.

Arrington said despite being heartbroken by the senseless act of violence he applauds the Texas Tech and Lubbock Police Department for their quick response to an active shooter situation. The suspect was later apprehended near the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
