Hurricane Nate Weakens to Tropical Storm After Landfall


Nate will likely turn toward the northeast and is expected to increase in forward speed during the next couple of days. Nate's center will make landfall on the MS coast within the next hour or two.

A storm surge warning is in effect from Grand Isle, Louisiana, to the Okaloosa/Walton county line in Florida.

Another tropical storm has developed, this time in the Atlantic Ocean.

Although the hurricane was not as powerful as last month's Maria and Irma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and parts of Florida all issued evacuation orders ahead of its arrival. On Saturday night, the storm came ashore along a sparsely populated area in southeast Louisiana near the Mississippi River.

The storm brought flood waters over highway 90 and to oceanside casinos in Biloxi, while floodwater swept through the streets in the communities of MS and Alabama.

The 2017 hurricane season officially ends November 30.

President Donald Trump issued an emergency declaration allowing federal aid to be made available to help mitigate the storm's impact.

It's a different story along the Gulf Coast, however, where Nate was expected to make landfall Saturday night with hurricane-force winds of up to 95 miles per hour.

And its quick speed decreased the likelihood of prolonged rain that would tax the city's weakened drainage pump system. Some areas could also receive as much as 10 inches of rain from the storm, and isolated tornadoes are possible in the region as well.

Nate packed maximum sustained winds of 130km/h and was about 675km south-southeast of the MS river on Saturday as it was expected to strengthen, the NHC said.

"Nate is expected to continue to quickly weaken as it moves farther inland", the Miami-based centre said in its latest bulletin. The fast moving hurricane that hit Category 2 winds at one point, should have lost steam as it moves through the Tennessee Valley.

Conditions may worsen in MS as Nate moves inland in the coming days. Winds are up to 90 miles per hour. There may not be a lot of warning for these particular types of storms.

The storm surge from the Mississippi Sound littered Biloxi's main beachfront highway with debris and flooded a casino's lobby and parking structure overnight.
