Carlos, who will be ceded by Red Bull, with whom he has contract until end of 2018, replaces British Jolyon Palmer, who has finally accepted economic proposal of Renault to leave early, and share team with German Nico Hulkenberg.

"I would like to thank Carlos for all his efforts over nearly three Formula 1 seasons", said Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost.

Following his Instagram post, Palmer said that he can look back at his performances at Renault with pride, as he assesses his future career options.

Sainz, who will be loaned to Renault from Red Bull in 2018, added: "First of all I would like to thank Toro Rosso and Red Bull for allowing me the possibility of finishing this season with Renault Sport Racing".

To fill Sainz's place, axed Daniil Kvyat will return, but whether the Russian will race full-time alongside Pierre Gasly next year is not yet clear. Sainz, meanwhile, paid tribute to the Italian team after being released "earlier than originally planned".

Sainz was due to join from Toro Rosso at the end of the season but Renault said in a statement that the team and Palmer had now agreed to end their relationship by mutual consent after Sunday's race. "Thanks everyone for the support during the last 2 years, it means a lot!"
