Detective Kristen Hearne, 29, was killed in the shooting, which was described as "more or less an ambush" by Polk County Police officials at a press conference on Friday.

According to Northwest Georgia News, the shooting happened around 11 a.m. on Santa Claus Road near Highway 100 between the cities of Cave Spring and Cedartown.

Records indicate a criminal past for the suspect captured in connection with shooting two Polk County officers, that fatally wounded one. He wasn't wearing any clothes when he was arrested. Hearne was going out just as a backup for Goodrich.

The chief said investigators don't typically wear bulletproof vests throughout the day.

Hearne was rushed to an area hospital, but later died. Spangler was captured around 2:45 p.m.

Both Spangler and Ruth were booked into the Polk County Jail. Both Spangler and Ruth were charged with murder and aggravated assault.

Ruth is also facing felony charges, according to Keenan.

Spangler was wanted on outstanding Walker County warrants for probation violation, Keenan said.

"I don't understand why", Chief Dodd said fighting back emotions.

"Police identified Spangler as a white male, 5'8", 130 lbs., with brown eyes, brown hair. "I have no words for it". "It's a senseless killing".

The loss is a first for Polk County Police.

Goodrich was struck in his bulletproof vest and survived. You always knew when she was in.

Hearne graduated from Rockmart High School. She leaves behind a husband and a three-year-old child.

An officer with the Polk County Police Department for the past five years, Hearne is the first officer killed in the line of duty in the 60 year history of the department. He said he was overwhelmed by the support he received Friday from the law enforcement community in Georgia. After the officers challenged their story, Spangler opened fire on them, the chief said. "Goodrich was saved by his bullet proof vest and was able to return fire and call for help".

Spangler's next appearance will be in Superior Court at a date and time yet to be determined.
