Ben McAdoo says Eli Manning 'sloppy' on key fourth-and-goal mistake

Sure, New York's defense is excellent.

That's the scenario New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo is facing.

The Giants started the 2007 season 0-2 before winning a huge road game against the Washington Redskins with a goal-line stand in the final minute, but this year's team does not have David Diehl, Shaun O'Hara, and Chris Snee along the offensive line. "So we talked about things, and there's some things I've got to do that I've got to be better at". "That's insanity. It's not working". There's always going to be ups and downs of a season, hopefully we've kind of hit the rough patch and we'll work ourselves out of it. "Maybe a little more drastic". "Somebody's got to win a job to get a job". When it comes to offensive line play, it's all five of us. Maybe he could come up with the magic formula for restoring Manning's respectability and dependability by actually getting the team into the end zone. There's no reason to think a timeout by the Giants would have impacted the Lions' decision.

"Sloppy quarterback play", McAdoo said of the penalty after the game.

To be fair, the Giants most explosive playmaker, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., still hasn't fully recovered from an ankle injury sustained in the preseason. Still, McAdoo looked at his quarterback, who didn't seem bothered by the dig.

"I think if we score there it changes the dynamic of the game", Pugh said.

"Just wanted to make sure that they were going to go for the field goal", McAdoo said.

But can he and McAdoo fix this?

"They're relentless to their pursuit of the ball", Pugh said. "They don't know what they were or who they are". McAdoo has been calling plays since he took over as New York's offensive coordinator in 2014, and hung onto them after being promoted to head coach in 2016. "They brought McAdoo in and let him change the philosophy".

Why would Ben McAdoo call out Eli Manning like that?

On Tuesday, the 36-year-old quarterback had a chance to respond, and he gave the type of answer you'd expect from a member of the Manning family.

That's a time that may be arriving sooner than anyone thinks.

Manning has struggled to create any fluidity with the offense through the early goings of the 2017 National Football League campaign, which he believes should reserve some level of criticism, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. ESPN's 538 site takes it further, saying that Manning has been mediocre. While mostly positive and protective, Tom Coughlin would not hesitate to publicly chastise Manning if he believed it was warranted during their 12 years together.

"(He) is talking about the interception and the delay of game", Manning said.

Among that group, Eli Manning ranks either last, or ahead of only Testaverde, in almost every season-indexed rate stat: completion rate, yards per attempt, interception rate, passer rating, adjusted yards per attempt, net yards per attempt and adjusted net yards per attempt.

Granted, Manning isn't to blame for all of the Giants' problems.

"We need this one", Collins said. "So we'll look into that as we move through the offseason".

Manning finished 22-of-32 passing for 239 yards with a touchdown and an interception Monday night. His passer rating, though, was just 86.0.
