Plunkett and Rashid lead England fight back in Windies T20

England's batting crumbled as they were bowled out for 155 to lose to West Indies by 21 runs in their Twenty20 worldwide at Chester-le-Street.

West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite said his side were so concerned about the prospect of "career-threatening injuries" on a sodden outfield they considered abandoning before beating England in a Twenty20 global.

Last year, Brathwaite had punished England with the bat, hitting Ben Stokes for four sixes in as many balls in a dramatic last over as West Indies came from behind to win a thrilling World Twenty20 final in Kolkata.

But July saw him return to West Indies duty in a Twenty20 worldwide against India in Kingston.

England lost Jason Roy off the very first ball of its run chase when he was dismissed by Jerome Taylor.

In response Alex Hales struck a blistering 43 as England started strongly but the hosts fell to 68-4 and were all out for 155.

"Losing the game was losing three wickets in that period", said Morgan.

On the field, Chris Gayle (40) and heir apparent Evin Lewis (51) got West Indies off to a flying start with a rapid first-wicket stand of 77 before England, with Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid sharing six wickets, held the tourists to 176 for nine.

Joe Root (17) and captain Eoin Morgan (two) went in quick succession as England faltered.

The 37-year-old Gayle, in common with several senior West Indies players, had been involved in a bitter dispute with Caribbean cricket chiefs.

While thankful for having won West Indies a trophy off his own bat, Brathwaite's goal now is for consistent global success.

We shall anyhow see the return of Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard in the West Indies' national side.

That match saw fellow left-hander Lewis make a stunning 125 not out.

The Trinidadian, however, was out soon afterwards when he drove Plunkett straight to England Test skipper Root at mid-off.

"It's really disappointing. I've heard a lot of people say the Irish Cricket Board put a lot of money into this game and it's really unfortunate that we weren't able to put on a show for them but hopefully in the future we can be back here and spread some joy to the Irish people".

The one-day worldwide series starts on Tuesday.
