Florida nursing home called emergency cellphone belonging to governor's office for help

Among the state's almost 700 nursing facilities, about 150 lacked power as of Wednesday morning, said the Florida Health Care Association, which represents most of the homes.

Elderly residents were evacuated Wednesday morning from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills which lost power during the storm. Police officials said other patients were in critical care.

On Twitter Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) said he is planning to "aggressively demand answers" on how the "unfathomable" incident happened, and will hold anyone who "wasn't acting in the best interests of their patients" to the "fullest extent of the law".

The storm's death toll grew to at least 33 people in Florida after a woman died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator in Palm Beach County, the Palm Beach Post newspaper reported. However, the nursing home itself does have power.

One of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record, Irma bore down on the Caribbean with devastating force as it raked the northern shore of Cuba last week.

Another 18 patients in an adjacent behavioral health facility are also being evacuated, Story said.

The federal scorecard, however, gave an "above average" rating to The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills for staffing.

A total of around 115 residents were moved from the retirement home, according to officials.

But on some other quality indicators, the nursing home was below average. The Rehabilitation Center of Hollywood Hills was incorporated in June 2015 and the hospital announced past year that it had purchased Palm Springs General Hospital in Hialeah for $40 million.

"It's a sad state of affairs", the police chief said.
