Alabama Power busy helping neighbors in Georgia after massive Irma outages

FPL, which serves almost 5 million homes and businesses, said it expects to restore power to essentially all its users, in the eastern portion of Florida, by the end of the weekend and the harder-hit western portion of the state by September 22. As of Tuesday morning, Tri-County EMC had 17,600 of their 21,000 members without power, while Jackson EMC had 63,000 of their 220,000 members without power.

FPL set up a mobile app, encouraging its customers to download it, before the storm. The company can not, by law, connect power to a damaged meter box, or other non-Georgia Power components, and property owners should contact a qualified electrician to make repairs in order for the company to reconnect service.

"This is the first real test of the grid following our significant investments and, so far, we are encouraged by what we're seeing", said Silagy.

"A portion of the facility did, in fact, have power, that there was a hospital across the parking lot from this facility and that the nursing home was required to have a permanently installed operational generator", the power company spokesman Richard Beltran told CNN.

Over the last 11 years, FPL has invested almost $3 billion to make the energy grid smarter, stronger and more storm-resilient.

"We have a massive contingent of tree contractors", he said.

FPL suggests that customer check their homeowner's insurance policy, which in some cases "may allow for recovery of spoiled food after natural disasters". "We're attacking it on all fronts", he said. Directing questions to FPL restoration workers slows down their work and, more importantly, can compromise their safety.

Georgia Power has posted estimated restoration times (ERTs) for dozens of cities and regions throughout Georgia at outagemap.georgiapower.com. They may be electrified by a downed line out of sight and conduct electricity over great distances.

As Georgia Power completes its restoration efforts, it will continue to work with and offer assistance to other utility providers, such as cities and EMCs, which may require additional resources for local power restoration. Power interruptions may cause traffic signals to stop working without warning.

◦Keep generators well away from open windows to prevent risky fumes from entering your home or a neighbor's home. Downed power lines may be hidden by debris or fallen trees. As of 2 p.m. Saturday, 1,650 customers in Palm Beach were still without power, or 6 percent. Be sure that ladders or scaffolds are far enough away so that you - and the ends of the tools you're using - stay at least 10 feet away from power lines.
