More than 61000 students to receive their Junior Cert results today

Months of study, hard work and determination certainly paid off for the students of Cashel Community School today after the high achieving pupils gathered to collect their Junior Certificate results.

The overall number sitting the exams across the country rose by 2.3 per cent this year to more than 61,500.

This year, 240 students got 10 As or more - but that's a 43% dip from the 2016 total. Today marks the completion of your junior cycle and it is a proud moment for yourselves, your parents and your teachers.

Locally, 1,144 Kilkenny students will be picking up their results today - 579 of whom are female, and 565 who are male.

This year will mark a significant change as it will be the first year that the new Framework for Junior Cycle has been examined.

The SEC say that they make every effort to try and investigate before students have their full examination results withheld, but that this is not always possible. I would encourage all students to celebrate in a safe manner.

Parents are also being urged to talk to their children about the risks of underage drinking ahead of tonight's exam celebrations.

They're being handed out in schools around the country this morning before becoming available online in the afternoon.
