Hurricane Irma threatens Florida's bustling tourism industry

Florida Gov. Rick Scott called the storm "devastating" after emerging from a Monday fly-over of the Keys.

More than six million homes and businesses remained without power on Tuesday in Florida and thousands were still displaced as the full scale of the damage left by Hurricane Irma was revealed. Irma made landfall on Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm at Cudjoe Key, about 75 miles from Key Largo, where the NBC 6 helicopter was flying.

Powerful Hurricane Jose missed the Leeward Islands this weekend, but it might have a second chance to strike the Caribbean and possibly Florida, forecasters said.

In Riviera Beach, on Florida's east coast, winds partially ripped roofs off two apartment buildings, forcing rescuers to evacuate about 50 people from the complex, according to CNN.

Irma once was the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic, a Category 5 with a peak wind speed of 185 miles per hour.

The Southside neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, heeded flood warnings Monday afternoon as the St. Johns River over flood into neighborhoods. It's now bearing down on the Tampa-St.

The city appeared to avoid a direct hit from the hurricane, which has claimed three lives in the United States so far, but heavy rain and flooding is still a major threat.

Much of Miami is now underwater as rising sea levels surge into the city's streets, trapping millions inside their homes and shelters.

More than 3.4 million homes in the state are without power, and parts of the city of Miami are under water.Three storm-related deaths have been reported, as Irma is moving northwards.

Irma, meanwhile, was making its way north after making landfall on the southwestern coast of Florida.

Expected to be even more unsafe than the powerful winds are the storm surges that threaten Florida's coastal cities.

"Once this system passes through, it's going to be a race to save lives and sustain lives", Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long said on Fox News Sunday. An update from Monroe County describes "an astounding recovery effort" taking place in the Florida Keys, where there was no water, power or cellphone service after the storm.

A dramatic video that was posted on social media a day earlier showed Drake being pushed by fierce winds, and even getting knocked down at one point, as he measured gusts that had hit Key West.

These tornadoes might be a little weaker, and dissipate faster, than a tornado spawned in, say, the US Central Plains.

Fort Lauderdale police arrested nine people they said were caught on TV cameras looting sneakers and other items from a sporting goods store and a pawn shop during the hurricane. "Stay safe, be prepared, listen to local evacuation advisories".

Forecasters say Irma now aimed at Keys, Tampa
Winds and high tides due to storm surge in the Bay Area could happen Monday afternoon between three and six feet. Forecasters also noted that much of Jose's path will depend on where Irma, now a tropical storm, ends up.
