Rohingya crisis: United Nations sees 'ethnic cleansing' in Myanmar

More than 300,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August 25, when armed Rohingya militants attacked police posts and a military base in the western state of Rakhine, which borders Bangladesh.

Amnesty said, based on interviews with eyewitnesses and analyses by weapons experts, there was "targeted use of landmines" along a narrow stretch of the northwestern border of Rakhine State that is a crossing point from Myanmar to Bangladesh for fleeing Rohingya Muslims.

"Questions that are put to me suggest that many people have difficulty reconciling what appears to be happening to Muslims there with Myanmar's reputation as a Buddhist country", the Tibetan spiritual leader wrote in a letter to Suu Kyi shortly after the latest fighting broke out.

High commissioner Zeid Raad Al Hussein urged Myanmar to end the "cruel military operation" in Rakhine state.

"People were scared and running out of the village", the villager said, speaking on condition of anonymity out of fear for his safety.

Before the crisis erupted, between 300,000 and 500,000 Rohingyas had been living in Bangladesh, only 32,000 of whom enjoy refugee status.

She urged the global community to mount pressure on Myanmar government to take back their nationals, said Karim. "To support the new arrivals there is now an urgent need for 60,000 new shelters, as well as food, clean water and health services, including specialist mental health services and support for survivors of sexual violence", he said. Other new arrivals were staying in schools, or huddling in makeshift settlements with no toilets along roadsides and in open fields. His wife, Ermine Erdogan, traveled to Bangladesh with a consignment of humanitarian aid last week, urging the government in Dhaka to keep its borders open for Rohingya refugees.

"The two refugees camps we are in are beyond overcrowded", said United Nations refugee agency spokeswoman Vivian Tan.

The wave of hungry and traumatized refugees pouring into Bangladesh has strained aid agencies and local communities already helping hundreds of thousands displaced by previous waves of violence in Myanmar.

In the last two weeks, the government hospital in Cox's Bazar has been overwhelmed by Rohingya patients, with 80 arriving in the last two weeks suffering gunshot wounds as well as bad infections.

The government had invited the Red Cross to assist them, he said.

The military says it is responding to attacks by Rohingya militants and denies it is targeting civilians.

The Dalai Lama told journalists in Dharamsala, India, that those who were persecuting Rohingya "should remember Buddha", a pointed reminder to the Buddhists who make up a majority of Myanmar's population.

He also spoke about rights concerns in Burundi, Venezuela, Yemen, Libya, and the United States, where he expressed concerns about the Trump administration's plan to dismantle protection for younger immigrants, many of whom have lived most of their lives in the United States.
