Oakley suing Knicks' owners for defamation

Shortly after the incident, Dolan suggested that Oakley had an alcohol problem and anger management issues. Oakley was clearly not pleased about being escorted out of the stands at the game, as it was an embarrassing situation to be in. "The Knicks' reputation sunk to unfathomable new lows in 2007 when Defendants Dolan and Madison Square Garden LP were found liable for retaliating against a former employee, Anucha Browne Sanders, who had complained of having been sexually harassed by the then-coach of the Knicks".

When Ms. Oakley continued to protest this outrageous behavior, the security guards started to physically grab at Mr. Oakley to forcibly compel him to leave. In a tweet sent out by the team's public relations account that night, Oakley was said to have "behaved in a highly inappropriate and completely abusive manner".

Oak was temporarily banned from the Garden and Dolan went on ESPN's "The Michael Kay Show" to claim he was being belligerent and theorized the former player had a drinking problem. We've said it before; he's his own worst problem.

"Mr. Oakley has never had a problem with excessive anger nor has he ever abused alcohol or any other drug", the suit sates.

"Defendant Dolan's statements were and are entirely without basis in fact, as Defendant Dolan was well aware", the lawsuit alleges.

Oakley's lawsuit also says he does not know when his feud with the Knicks owner began.

Oakley, who played for the Knicks from 1988 to 1998 and helped them reach the NBA Finals, had a poor relationship with the team and Dolan before February thanks in part to his criticisms of the organization and its owner. Oakley claims that he had tried to arrange a meeting with Dolan when he took over the team, but Dolan wouldn't agree to it for unknown reasons.

His lawyer said Oakley didn't need a trial to prove his innocence.

Oakley averaged 9.7 points and 9.5 rebounds over 19 seasons during his National Basketball Association career.

The beloved former Knicks forward got into an altercation with MSG security during a game on February 8th and had to be physically removed from the court.

Now Oakley has chose to fight back and get some compensation for "emotional distress and/or mental anguish" and even took some well-deserved pot-shots at the Knicks Owner stating that "Since Defendant Dolan became chairman of the Knicks, they nearly immediately relinquished their status as one of the NBA's premiere teams, winning only a single lone playoff series since the turn of the century". The complaint says that Oakley continues to suffer as a result of what happened, and asks for unspecified damages.

Dolan is executive chairman of Madison Square Garden Co. and MSG Networks Inc, which are also defendants in Oakley's lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
