North Korea slams United Nations sanctions

North Korea continues to defy UN resolutions and pressure from the global community in pursuit of missiles that can deliver nuclear weapons to the United States.

"The choice is theirs", she added.

So while China does not want a nuclear North Korea, it wants a North Korean collapse even less and it will resist any sanctions which risk that outcome.

"This is a text designed for adoption", one source told the Guardian.

USA envoy Nikki Haley called them the "strongest measures ever imposed on North Korea" even though they ended up dropping demands for an oil embargo and freeze on Kim's assets. The council also froze the assets of three additional entities: the Central Military Commission, the powerful Organization and Guidance Department that directs key personnel appointments and the Propaganda and Agitation Department, which oversees the North's media and its censorship.

North Korea says its weapons development is vital to stave off the threat of a USA invasion.

Both China, the patron of North Korea, and Russian Federation, one of its main trading partners, sought to put pressure on the USA to agree on not overthrowing the Kim Jong-un regime or to force a reunion of North and South Koreas.

Conversely, the USA must deal with the bellicose rhetoric from North Korea which routinely threatens to strike the United States. So far Comrade Kim's reckless behavior with the sixth nuclear test and a rash spate of missile firings including a rocket over Japan, hardly argues for the peaceful path. Washington and its allies say these legitimate defensive measures are not comparable to the North's threatening nuclear program that has been banned and sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned, "The latest nuclear and missile tests by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are profoundly destabilizing for regional and worldwide security".

The UN Security Council's adoption of fresh sanctions against North Korea is not enough to induce a marked change in its behavior but is still meaningful in that, by targeting oil supplies to the country for the first time, it signals a strong warning that tougher action remains ready to be taken, experts said Tuesday.

According to Chinese customs data, North Korea imports almost 2.2 million barrels a year in petroleum products, but some USA officials believe the true number is much higher: about 4.5 million barrels.

Though Russia voted in favor of the resolution on Monday, President Vladimir Putin earlier downplayed the effectiveness of sanctions given North Korea's unrelenting nuclear ambitions.

"This resolution also puts an end to the regime making money from the 93,000 North Korean citizens it sends overseas to work and heavily taxes", Haley said.

Beijing does not publish statistics for crude oil shipments to the North, shrouding the issue in secrecy, but is believed to supply around 4 million barrels a year.

"We have lived under United States sanctions for decades, practically under the most severe sanctions", the diplomat said.

Pyongyang's ambassador Han Tae Song, addressing the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, said: "The Washington regime fired up for political, economic, and military confrontation, (is) obsessed with the wild game of reversing the DPRK's development of nuclear force which has already reached the completion phase". The United States has assured to not want regime change, it is hard to directly target Kim Jong-un, has pleaded Moscow, according to a diplomatic source.

Their document also denounces a random application of the sanctions and specifies that Pyongyang is a past master in the art of using third countries to transport its cargoes or to enter into financial transactions.
