The storm was about 335 miles east-southeast of the Northern Leeward Islands at 5 p.m. ET Friday, moving west-northwest at 17 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. A hurricane watch has been issued for the state of Veracruz in Mexico as the storm and its 75 miles per hour winds move in on Thursday.
Katia has "worrying characteristics" because it is very slow moving and could dump a lot of rain on areas that have been saturated in recent weeks, Luis Felipe Puente, head of Mexico's national emergency services, told domestic television on Wednesday.
The Mexican state of Veracruz has a hurricane watch in effect and the storm is now about 185 miles North-Northwest of Veracruz.
While Irma was destroying islands, both Jose and Katia storms strengthened to hurricane status, bringing the number to three for the Atlantic basin. If Irma's center marches north directly over Florida's eastern coastline, former hurricane hunter Jeff Masters says high winds and storm surges could turn the Gold Coast to the Mud Coast. "Three or more hurricanes have occurred simultaneously in the following years in the Atlantic (in the satellite era): 1967, 1980, 1995, 1998, 2010 and now in 2017", said Jeff Masters, a meteorologist with Weather Underground, in an email to Gizmodo. That's Hurricane Katia, which was making landfall late Friday in Mexico.Читайте также: Edith Windsor, LGBTQ Icon and American Hero, Dies at 88
This TS Watch is issued in anticipation of tropical storm conditions possibly affecting St. Kitts- Nevis within the next 48 hours.
This projected path would take it near or just north of the Leeward Islands late this week and into the weekend, less than a week after major Hurricane Irma batters the area.
Katia was expected to hit the state of Veracruz by early Saturday.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
