DOJ Won't Charge Officers In Gray Case

Gray, 25, was arrested in West Baltimore the morning of April 12, 2015, then placed in the back of a police van with his hands cuffed behind his back and his legs shackled.

Even with those charges dropped, however, it remained to be seen whether the federal government would file charges against the officers.

After a mistrial and three acquittals, Baltimore's top prosecutor had announced she was ending local authorities' effort to prosecute the officers, because winning a conviction had proven too hard. Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby then made a decision to drop the remaining cases.

Justice Department spokeswoman Lauren Ehrsam told Reuters she had no comment on the Sun report. Meanwhile, the Justice Department launched its own criminal, civil rights investigation into Gray's death, as well as a broader probe of possible systemic violations in the Baltimore Police Department.

Gray's death prompted weeks of protests and unrest in Baltimore, The Associated Press noted.

"However, if the sources are accurate, we are pleased that the DOJ came to the conclusions that are being reported", he said in a statement.

"These cases were never criminal and should never have been charged as such", said Rice's attorney, Michael Belsky.

Yet all six were cleared or else the charges against them were dropped, including officer Caesar Goodson, who had been driving the vehicle in which Mr Gray was being transported without being properly restrained.

Five of the officers face disciplinary trials.

The hearings will be open to the public.
