Washington, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) Hurricane Irma fell today to category 1 and its sustained maximum winds dropped to 120 kilometers per hour as it moves along the northwestern coast of the USA state of Florida.

The storm killed at least 28 people as it raged westward through the Caribbean on the way to Florida, devastating several small islands, and grazing Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti before pummelling parts of Cuba's north coast with 11m waves.

And in Alabama, some city school districts including Birmingham, Huntsville and Auburn planned to close Monday and in some cases Tuesday. This means most people who chose to stay hunkered down at home or in a shelter can expect hurricane-force winds in excess of 74 miles per hour.
