Audi R8 V10 RWS revealed

Audi has unveiled a new rear-wheel-drive version of its R8 supercar, a model that normally comes with a Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Thanks to the removal of the front propeller shaft and front axle driveshafts the R8 V10 RWS sheds 50kg compared to the all-paw version, resulting in a 1590kg kerb weight and improving the power to weight rations to 4.0kg per kW next to the quattro model's 1640kg weight and 4.1kg per kW stats. The coup is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100kmph in mere 3.7seconds while the Spyder can sprint in around 3.8seconds. Since 2000, Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 13 times with rear-wheel drive (or part-time hybrid all-wheel drive) cars. But we're sure it makes up for this every time you turn in a sharp corner.

Until now. Audi Sport GmbH, the division formerly known as quattro, has created this, the R8 RWS.

Short for Rear Wheel Series, the R8 RWS comes with the same 533bhp 5.2-litre mid-mounted naturally aspirated (non-turbocharged) V10 engine fitted to the standard R8.

The head of Audi Sport Stefan Winkelmann said that the new Audi R8 V10 RWS "was created for the purist from of Motorsport" and allows the driver to enter the auto in a controlled skid. The top speed remains same as the Quattro equipped derivatives.

The chassis and steering system of the R8 V-10 RWS has been reworked in line with the switch to RWD.

Marking the RWS out over the regular R8 V10 are a matt black grille matching air intakes and the lower sideblade in a body colour. The combination of Dynamic mode and Sport ESC now allows the driver to produce controlled drifts.

"A limited-edition special model for customers with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment, the R8 V10 RWS is an absolutely exclusive offer". The sideblades are also split in color, with the upper half being gloss black and the bottom half being body color. There will also be an optional red film running over the hood, roof and rear end. With production limited, it will be interesting to see how many units are allotted for India. The sport bucket seats can be had as well, while the Alcantara ones come as standard. Orders will start in Autumn of 2017 in Europe, with no word on any US-bound models, and deliveries will start in early 2018.
