Less than one week after North Korea appeared to carry out its sixth nuclear test, South Korea warned Thursday that its neighbor may fire an intercontinental ballistic missile this weekend. South Korea's Defense Ministry couldn't immediately confirm when the four launchers added on Thursday will be operationally capable.

He said the United Nations should take "necessary measures", but added that sanctions and pressure should spur dialogue and negotiation between the sides toward the goal of a peaceful solution on the Korean Peninsula.

The president said as the North continues to advance its nuclear and missile capabilities, South Korea has no choice but to maximize its defenses.

In South Korea, thousands of police officers in riot gear swarmed some 400 protesters who had been occupying a road leading to the site where THAAD is installed in the rural town of Seongju. The other half is dialogue and negotiation.

In a sign of the global stakes over Pyongyang's latest test, China said on Thursday that it had lodged a diplomatic protest with South Korea following its announcement that it would increase deployments of a U.S. anti-missile system.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev has said his country will wait for two months for concrete progress, such as participation by Japanese investors, to be made in joint economic activities on and around the northern territories.

The deployment "does not help addressing the security concerns of relevant countries", Geng Shuang, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, said on Wednesday.

Geng called for South Korea and the United States to "immediately stop the deployment process" and remove the equipment or risk exacerbating tensions on the peninsula.

China's opposition to the THAAD deployment has sent formerly strong relations with South Korea into a tailspin, cutting deeply into the crucial economic relationship between the two countries.

"South Korea is the world's second-largest importer of gas". Media releases from North Korea often seem intent on proving doubters wrong, and its tests sometimes seem created to demonstrate previously unattributed capabilities. Rather, North Korea says it wants a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the U.S.as a deterrent against attack.
