California dad gets 25 to life in son's smothering death

Aramazd Andressian, Sr. admitted earlier this year that he killed 5-year-old Aramazd Jr.

Estevez attended the brief court hearing earlier this month in Alhambra, carrying her son's ashes in an urn.

Aramazd Andressian Jr.'s disappearance sparked a monthslong search for the boy, whose body was eventually recovered when his father led police to the Lake Cachuma area in Santa Barbara County.

Andressian remained silent throughout the tense hearing. "Like my son, I, too, have died", she said.

Prosecutors have not revealed how the boy was killed but said the evidence against Andressian is overwhelming and the killing was planned and deliberate.

Authorities said Andressian killed his son in a plot to get back at his estranged wife.

Andressian's attorney, Ambrosio Rodriguez, said his client wanted to apologize and had taken responsibility by confessing and pleading guilty.

Attorneys said there was no agreement worked out between the two sides involving the plea. He was found unconscious at Arroyo Seco Park in South Pasadena, claiming he didn't know where his son was.

"He did not remember what happened to his child or any details that were useful in locating his son", Lt. Joe Mendoza of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told reporters in May.

Aramazd Andressian Sr. looked forward or down as people, including the boy's mother, stood at a lectern behind him and made emotional statements imploring the judge to give the maximum sentence.

35, who initially denied any involvement in his son's disappearance following a trip to Disneyland in April, had on August 1 changed his not guilty plea and admitted to the killing, KTLA reported. While in custody, he confessed and told investigators where to find the body, authorities said.

The father said he did not remember what happened to his child or any details that were useful in locating the boy, according to Mendoza, who said a prescription bottle was found inside his vehicle, which was doused inside and outside with gasoline.

Andressian left the Los Angeles area after being questioned by police and traveled to Las Vegas, authorities said. Little Aramazd Andressian Jr. was last seen alive following that Disneyland trip back in April; his mother reported him missing the day after the trip when his father did not return the boy to her custody as scheduled.

The search for the boy spanned several Southern California counties.

On the day of his funeral, the boy's devastated mom carried her son's hat to his tiny coffin. "You are a failure as a father, you are a failure as a man and you are a failure as a human being", she said.

The boy's remains were found in Santa Barbara County two months after his disappearance after Andressian told investigators where to find the boy's body although it is unclear how he died.
