Australia will stop broadcasting for 12 hours to remind young people to enrol to vote ahead of a vote on marriage equality.

Polling has shown youth voters are the strongest supporters of equal marriage, but just.equal says they are less likely to be enrolled to vote, and if they are enrolled their address details are more likely to be wrong.

Ahead of the deadline, the Equality Campaign has encouraged all Australians to enrol and update their details with the Australian Electoral Commission.

In the weeks leading up to the close of rolls after the 2016 election was called on 8 May there were 132,000 additions to the electoral roll, out of a total 687,000 enrolment transactions.

A majority of votes in favour of same-sex marriage is not enough to legislate it.

Proponents for same-sex marriage say the vote, which is being challenged in the High Court and whose outcome is not legally binding, exposes gays and lesbians to a bruising campaign for no good reason.
