HBO offers $250000 to hackers, here's why

There is no official confirmation or comment from HBO regarding the authenticity of the latest message from the hacker.

It is plausible that HBO will decide to not cooperate with the hackers considering there's no guarantee the group won't demand further ransom payments or still release the scripts for the show.

Whether or not HBO ever meant to follow through with its US$250,000 offer, the email raised questions on Friday among security professionals about the importance of the data and whether HBO's reaction might encourage future attacks.

In that message, an HBO executive reportedly writes, "As a show of good faith on our side, we are willing to commit to making a bug bounty payment of $250,000 to you as soon as we can establish the necessary account and acquire bitcoin".

According to CNBC, the email was sent by an IT employee from HBO on July 27, four days after the hacking group initially demanded a ransom from HBO. But in a statement issued Sunday after the hacker's dumping, the network did not indicate it would yield to pressure tactics.

In the breach, which became public July 31, hackers stole 1.5 terabytes of programming and internal communications. "The hacker may continue to drop bits and pieces of stolen information in an attempt to generate media attention".

"Hackers are not in this game for US$250,000; this probably took them a lot of time and effort", Goel said.

The hack suffered by HBO has been in the headlines for the last couple of weeks, not least because it led to the leak of episodes and scripts.

HBO channel is now being threatened for nearly several million dollars as ransom for getting back their data.

HBO has said that it is working with authorities and cybersecurity firms to investigate the attack, which is the latest to hit a Hollywood business.

"It's kind of like kidnap and ransom and torture", she said.

"The reason they got in this scenario is they didn't have the right pre-emption strategy", Falkowitz said.
