Nigeria's security forces have raided a United Nations camp in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri and carried out an unauthorised search, a United Nations official has told the BBC.

The military confirmed the incident in a separate statement, saying the action was in line with the ongoing search efforts.

The U.N. says it has no information "regarding the reason or motivations for the unauthorized search".

Attahiru stressed the commitments of the Nigerian Army to work in synergy with United Nations and other development organizations to address the humanitarian crisis in the North-East region.

The commander disclosed that the army conducted condone operation in the Pompori area of Maiduguri in search of high profile Boko Haram insurgents.

"We are here in support of the government of Nigeria, the United Nations agencies and over 60 non-government organizations", said Lundberg.

He stressed that the condone and search operation was not specifically targeted at the United Nations facility, but rather done in the general area of operation.
