A police spokesman says a New York City police officer has been shot in Brooklyn.

Police say a female officer was shot in the arm by a "long rifle".

Police officials later revealed that the anxious woman had told cops that her son was not violent - and unarmed - but acting erratically. The mother warned the officer that the man sometimes runs when he sees police. When the officer approached the bedroom in the rear of the house, the suspect fired shots at the officer.

Officers reported seeing a woman with a baby - who was frantically trying to get out of another apartment in the building - as the suspect barricaded himself inside.
