The report, which covers two versions each of the Surface Laptop and Surface Book, said the devices showed "poor predicted reliability in comparison to most other brands".

They conducted a survey of 90,000 Surface users and have found out that 25% face problems with their devices within two years of usage.

Microsoft is new to the hardware business and has generally been met with favorable reviews of its laptops from consumers and pundits in the industry.

For its part, Microsoft does refute the findings, not that we would expect them to say anything different, and says that their return and support rates differ from the findings in the Consumer Report Survey.

Microsoft's estimated breakage rate for its laptops and tablets was higher than most other brands' and the difference was statistically significant enough to warrant this response.

In earlier lab tests that measure factors such as display quality, battery life, speed and ergonomics, Surface devices were ranked highly by Consumer Reports.

While the Surface series hasn't been as strong of a performer for Microsoft lately as it has in the past, the series has still been a major player in defining the hybrid tablet PC market among consumers. Within the Surface product family, Microsoft also sells the Surface Laptop, which features a traditional clamshell laptop design.

A number of survey respondents said they experienced problems with their devices during startup. A few commented that their machines froze or shut down unexpectedly, while several others told us the touch screens weren't responsive enough.

This retraction does not appear to be based on actual testing from within the Consumer Report labs.
