Valve announced Artifact, a Dota card game, during tonight's The International 7 matches in Seattle.

Those expecting more from Artifact are probably going to be disappointed but the bolstering fan-base of Dota 2 should be fairly optimistic. This has resulted in quite a few digital card games such as The Elder Scrolls: Legends, Gwent, and now it looks like Valve wants in as well. According to descriptions given by broadcaster Sean "Day9" Plott, Artifact will involve classic Dota staples like lanes, creeps, and barracks. Naturally, a selection of characters from Dota 2 will be featured as well. Comparisons to Blizzard's Hearthstone seem inevitable. And yet, three years later, it has become the household name in digital card games.

Since Blizzard's MOBA, Heroes of the Storm, is significantly less successful than Dota 2, it'll be interesting to see if Valve can compete with Hearthstone, which is hugely successful.

Artifact is slated for a 2018 release.
