Dick Advocaat says that he can "understand" Virgil van Dijk's decision to try and force his exit from Southampton.

The Reds were forced to apologise for their conduct over the deal however, and subsequently pulled out of the transfer after being accused of making an illegal approach.

Southampton managed Mauricio Pellegrino has publicly revealed his hopes that the player will stay at the club past this summer window but even if the Dutchman doesn't leave for Liverpool, it's looking less and less likely that he'll still be a Saints player come September 1st.

The Dutch defender has made it clear to the Saints that he wants to leave this summer amid serious interest from Liverpool, while Chelsea are also believed to be keen on snaring the 26-year-old.

It was suggested this week Van Dijk had handed in a formal request to Southampton but that is reportedly not the case.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea believe they have a better chance of signing Van Dijk as they have a better relationship with the south coast club than Liverpool.

Sky Sports presenter Jim White has claimed that Blues boss Antonio Conte wants van Dijk as well as Leicester City defender Danny Drinkwater as he looks to bolster his side as they will be aiming to defend the Premier League crown during the upcoming season.

But Van Dijk has since refused to be involved in Southampton's pre-season plans and is now training alone to push through a move.
