Merkel said the federal government had put aside additional money for more investment in its mid-term budget plans, adding: "We still have a lot to do in this regard".

"It was clear that it was to be held in a major metropolitan area", said the German chancellor, in an interview to the tv channel ARD, on the choice to meet the major leaders of the planet in his hometown, located in the north of the country.

Merkel reprised the spending theme in front of a business group on Monday, telling them in the Baltic port city of Stralsund, home to her constituency, that she'll press ahead with her trade agenda and seek full employment in Germany by 2025.

He said: "Germany is a great country".

Germany's current-account surplus has been on the receiving end of persistent criticism, including most recently from the International Monetary Fund and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Riots broke out in the city, with dozens of police officers injured by left-wing extremists.

Merkel has said she is open to proposals of strengthening the single currency through the creation of a euro zone finance minister who would oversee a pooled budget for investments and transfers meant to help member states cushion downturns.
